President Trump “authorized the Department of Defense to equip Kurdish elements of the Syrian Democratic Forces as necessary to ensure a clear victory over ISIS in Raqqa, Syria” according to Dana W. White, the Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs.
This action may strain U.S. relations with Turkey, a U.S. ally and member of NATO. Turkey is engaged in the complicated conflict in Syria in the fight against ISIS, but Turkey also actively opposes the YPG, a Kurdish militia in Syria, and the PKK, a Kurdish political organization in Turkey. However, the U.S. has been supporting the Kurdish YPG in their fight against ISIS.
